"Stoner Ducati placed on top in Japan."

Casey Stoner Ducati puts at Friday during free practice for the Japanese Grand Prix.

The four Japanese manufacturers of MotoGP were once again forced to observe a Ducati sit on top of hours in his home event, as Casey Stoner set the fastest time round during the Friday free practice at Motegi.

Ducati - who has won the last three Grands Prix of Japan, although with the former pilot Loris Capirossi - saw all four of his Bridgestone-Shodo Desmosedici finish inside the top nine, after the opening of a day divided into a wet and then almost dry session.

Stoner - it needs to reduce its current deficit of 87 points to Valentino Rossi to at least 75 on Sunday whether to keep their slim title chances of life - ended the day just 0.073secs ahead of Honda Dani Pedrosa, with a third since most 0.316secs Rossi Back to Yamaha.

"This morning we struggled to find grip back on the track wet and could not understand why, so this afternoon was a case of taking our time to get the right of establishment and, finally, we have found a decent feel , "Said the queen world champion, who was third fastest, however, this morning.

"We have a few areas for improvement and one of the things I tried towards the end of this evening has proved a dead end, it cost us some time. Basically, we tried a new tire, but was turning up in a the rear lot and forces me to wide on the brakes. We have to do for tomorrow and a dry day, no doubt, help!

"My wrist feels very good here - much better than it has for the last two races anyway, just in the dry is a bit more difficult in the wet is no problem. I do not use any dressing I preferred not because I did not move with it. If I may, I will not use it, "he added.

Team-mate Marco Melandri, who will join Kawasaki for next season, was eighth fastest before the end of the afternoon.

"This morning we had a lot of problems - which were not fully prepared with electronics and I was running wide for the first four or five laps," he recalled. "But in the afternoon things were much better. We still have a few things to work on the weekend, but has started out positively and I believe that this trend can be carried out at the race.

"Now we'll see if we have two more sessions in the wet but at least it looks as if it is dry for Sunday. If that's the case we have an idea about the choice of tires and, although we have a long way to go with the bike I can say I'm happy today, "said the Italian.
